Jeff Healey Passed away yesterday. He was diagnosed with cancer and lost his vision at just 1 year old. He never accepted special treatment during the 40yrs he fought cancer. At 22 he was already one of the elite guitar players. Over the last 8 years the cancer was taking its toll. He never stopped fighting. and was determined to finish the cd he started 8 years ago. the CD will be released today. When I saw Jeff play, I would either be inspired to practice until my fingers hurt and I couldnt hold the guitar anymore.. or Id start planning a very expensive coffee table.
I feel like I Owe Jeff something.. I started playing guitar at 6 or 7 years old. He was an inspiration to many players. he played the guitar flat on his lap like a piano, he played the shit outa that thing,. I heard him play Gary Moores "still have the blues". but he didnt sing it. he did it as an instrumental, and Like Ozzy said. musicians are all a bunch of thieves. lol, I learned it a couple days later. I always loved playing guitar, and from 10yrs old thats what I wanted to do. By hook or by crook, I was gonna do it for a living.(good thing Im a crook).. somehow a few months later I got a pitbull stuck to my hand(not because I was being a crook). and he felt I needed some holes all the way through, and threw in some nerve damage as well. TOO MAKE A LONGER STORY LESS LONG.. I QUIT.. I PLAYED A LITTLE BASS IN COVER BANDS EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, BUT THAT WASNT THE SAME. SO I RETIRED AND WENT BACK TO WORK. (I thought. who the fu(k retires THEN goes to work????) anyway. About 6 years later I stumbled on the movie Roadhouse on cable one night, JEFFS in the movie. and I was inspired again. I Knew Jeff had cancer from 1. and was blind, and when I felt comfy with my playing I recorded "Still have the blues"(the first recording doesnt sound great(rusty) but thats the one playing below) as an intrumental. and that started me all over again. So, Jeff I thank you! with a tear in my eye and from the bottom of my soul, LIKE YOU SING IT IN THE MOVIE.. I WOKE UP THIS MORNING AND I GOT MYSELF A BEER. CHEERS BROTHER. SAY HEY TO STEVIE,DIME AND
RANDY! REST IN PEACE
