Runic Half Months

Nauthiz "now-these" n as in "need" Upload you Photos @ MySpaceFly.com Nov 13 - Nov 27 For all forms of success and all types of achievement. However, remember that a gift, and take note of the associated god. Useful for harnessing internal power, intuition and creativity, the ability to achieve, as with a sudden rush of adrenaline or creation of momentum. The fourth of Odin's runes frees one from locks and fetters, which ties in well with the meaning of nyd. Cooper, Esoteric Rune Magic. Need fastens on the nameless, With naught of wealth or near kin, Nith seizes a landless one, with none to serve, A useless wight, and woeful for it, In hunger and shame, hearthless, shivering, The one who lacks longs for warmpth, For hard from the north night winds are howling: Like iron bands on the breast drawn tighter, The harsh fear of doom, dread of what bodes, Pricks the heart of the harried one, Waylaid by Wyrd in a wicked pass. Of help in need one is never bereft If Allfather's bond they acknowledge in time, Asking for better and acting in kind, Taking up firebow ere frost freezes life, Strongly spinning, till singeing, the twig Flares up flame, feeds on tinder, Blossoms hotly, blazing to ward; A boon to the flesh, bright to the eye, Of a farer through darkness in doubt of dawn. When hope is hidden, and the heart is cold, In neediness, find mood, in nether lands strength; Self by self freed though sparked by One Who only draws knots around the necks of Heroes. "Nauthiz" means "need," and other meanings include distress, binding, constriction, poverty, pressure, rope, packaging, arrest, prevention, bandages, choking, strangulation, detention and alarm. While this rune mostly has to do with unpleasant and difficult things, it has more positive uses as well, as we'll soon see. In any case whether they work weal or woe, there is no way to avoid dealing with the forces embodied in this rune. For instance, belts and shoelaces are benign manifestations of Nauthiz! So is sewing together pieces of cloth to make a garment. "Distress....1. To subject to severe strain or pressure; to put to sore straights...2. To crush in battle...3. To constrain by force or suffering...4. To cause pain or anxiety to; to afflict, vex, make miserable. 5. To rob; to plunder. 6. To levy a distress upon." Nauthiz is still with us today, howbeit often in more subtle forms. Think of the working homeless; for example. Individuals who are employed full-time but who still cannot secure housing for themselves is a difficult contemporary problem; one which wasn't even thought of a generation ago. Nauthiz both binds and presses down. Poverty is terribly hard to get out of. Folks try and try, but often just when they think they've gotten it licked, something new gets thrown at them! When you are impoverished, even the tiniest setback can spell disaster, since you have no reserves. While spouting much nonsense about the virtue of poverty, contemporary Western society and its predominant religion tend in actuality to despise the impoverished. Heathens should not despise the poor, but we are practical folks. There is no particular virtue in poverty (or, for that matter, in its opposite pole, excessive greed for wealth). Heathens should strive for a balance here and elsewhere in life. "Needy" and "naughty" are often connected, they have different etymologies. Much crime is born of the pressure exerted by Nauthiz. Having strong standards is helpful in difficult economic circumstances. Have in mind BEFORE "need" strikes what you will NOT do regardless of circumstances. Set your own personal moral/ethical standards ahead of time. While none of this is easy or pleasant, there is no excuse for giving up. Those who keep trying usually manage to overcome Nauthiz sooner or later, and even learn something in the process! This is NOT an "easy" or "safe" rune! In ancient times, midwives scratched Nauthiz onto their fingernails and even the palms of their hands to ensure a safe grip on the newborn infant (they are really slimy when born; they don't show that on tv). Dropping an infant could be fatal, both to the infant, and in those rougher times, to the midwife, considering she was surrounded by the mother and baby's armed relatives! Malpractice suits are, I suppose, the modern equivalent. Nauthiz can also help knit broken bones. However, neither Nauthiz nor Isa should be used for arthritis or other illnesses which inhibit movement. The last thing you want to do in such a case is inhibit what little movement there is! I have heard of rituals of kindling the "Need-fire" to overcome Nauthiz. The Need-fire is sometimes depicted as being ritually kindled by means of friction, using a fire-drill (a bow, a stick and a piece of wood, not pulling an alarm!) Other methods are no doubt feasible as well. However, the Need-fire is ultimately kindled within ourselves. Nauthiz can be a call to overcome difficult circumstances and be strengthened thereby.Ever notice how many rich kids turn out to be weak people? An old saying I have found useful says "don't pray for an easy life; pray to be a strong person." Nauthiz, embodied in whatever is holding you down or back, can be rammed with Uruz, hammered with Thurisaz, pushed aside by Jera, or dragged upward by Berkano. The last two methods are the safest. Nauthiz can sometimes be used (with great care) to divert the flow of Wyrd when it is leading to something disastrous. Add Nauthiz to the layers of orlog in the life of the person or situation you are seeking to help, but place it at an angle, as it were, to change the flow of events. Think of a log (no etymological connection to "orlog" but a good memory aid anyway) being placed into the stream of Wyrd to divert (not block entirely; no way to do that anyway, even if that were desirable) its flow! However, even here, nature abhors a vacuum, so you've got to place a more desirable or "positive" rune into the gap alongside Nauthiz so Wyrd can flow through that "new" rune and bring about the NEEDED result. It is not enough to just divert Wyrd's flow by means of Nauthiz. Nauthiz is a very lonely, isolating and alienating factor. By helping our fellow Heathens in time of need (there's that word again!), we struggle against Nauthiz. Anything we do, whether in our own communities or far away, to help others, especially to help others help themselves, is a struggle against the effects of Nauthiz. Nauthiz brings great suffering, but can also serve to bring folks together to help each other. Thus, it can help us to be more compassionate It can be a great help or a great worker of woe. Learn its lessons well, and apply them with the greatest of care. When drawing this Rune, it is a good time to remember that it is much better to think on something carefully rather than act on it too soon and do the wrong thing. Any parent understands this Rune firsthand. Children often make demands of their parents that if they did not think about carefully, could result in pain and constraint for all! Drawing this Rune encourages weighing all possibilities carefully before committing oneself and the ability to say "no" if necessary. ADVICE: It is also good to remember that sometimes this is something you need to experience but did not ask for! Patience and inner wisdom will aid in making the correct choice which will lead to the right accomplishment in the end. Pay Attention To: We can't always make the right judgment or give the right answer. Through pain, suffering and necessity, we learn while our will and our character are strengthened. Let you heart rule with the right kind of love when dealing with others. Do not lose your temper. Accept what has happened, keep your faith firm and restrain your impulses. An eighth one is mine: quite useful to hear For all the people in danger and need. Where hate should arise between people I settle it fast. Rune of Karma and Rune of the Norn, goddess of destiny. Rune of karmic debts (the Norn SKULD). Rune of karmic law, of karmic need. Divine justice that balances. "Hate" in the song refers to unresolved karma. Nod helps to master you karma, after you have accepted it. NOD symbolized the appearance out of the infinite, out of the undefined. The Divine manifesting itself within the finite universe, for "a god who does not manifest itself is dead" (Feuerbach). Uses: NOD makes you aware of your karmic debts, and it helps dissolve karma. It leads to truth and fitting into the cosmic order, or the Divine Plan. NOD brings the protection of high spiritual entities of our Solar Symbolism. Use your karma and live it consciously. Constraint Necessity Pain Whoever said that climbing in through the dark window was without peril? Outgrown garments from our youth don't make good formal dress... There is a Season for All Things and a reason life doesn't always fit. --If Reversed: Great Teachers sometimes are in disguise as Pain and Constrictions. Remember the etymology of sufferance... su.fer: doing foundations The necessity of dealing with severe Constraint ls the lesson of Nauthiz. The positive aspects of this Rune represent the limitations we directly cause ourselves; its negative side attracts limitations from those around us. Both are equally difficult to handle. The role of Nauthiz is to identify our shadow, our dark and repressed side, places where growth has been stunted, resulting in weaknesses that we project onto others. Don't take this world personally, this Rune is saying: Work with the shadow, examine what: inside you magnetizes misfortune into your life. When at last you can look upon Nauthiz with a smile, you will recognize the troubles denials, and setbacks of life as your teachers, guides and allies. The need for restraint is unquestionable here. Drawing this Rune indicates that there will be holdups, reasons to reconsider your plans carefully. There is work to be done on your self. So take it on with good will and show perseverance. This is a time to pay off old debts, to restore, if not harmony, at least balance. So mend, restore, redress - when fishermen can't go to sea they repair nets. Let the Constraints of the time serve you in righting your relationship to your Self. Be mindful that rectification comes before progress. And once again, consider the uses of adversity. Reversed: As part of the Cycle of initiation, Nauthiz is the great teacher disguised as the bringer of pain and limitation. It has been said that only at the point of greatest darkness do we become aware of the Light within us by which we come to recognize the true creative power of the self. When something within us is disowned, that which is disowned wreaks havoc. A cleansing is re- quired here; in undertaking it you fund a will and strengthen character. Begin with what is most difficult and proceed to what is easy. Or, conversely, begin with what is easy and proceed to what is most difficult. Either way, remember that "suffering," in its original sense, merely meant "undergoing." Thus you are re- quired to undergo the dark side of your passage, and bring it in to the Light. Controlling your anger, restrain- ing your impulses, keeping your faith firm - all this is at issue here. Modesty and good temper are essential at such a time. "All places that the eye of heaven visits Are to a wise man ports and happy havens. Teach thy necessity to reason thus; There is no virtue like necessity." -William Shakespeare Element(s): Fire Zodiac Sign: Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn Gemstone: Lapis Lazuli Colour: Black Tree: Rowan,Beech Herb/Plant: Snakeroot,Bistort Polarity: male Associated gods: Skuld - ("She Who Is Becoming" or "That which shall be" ) One of the Great Norns. Gunnr and Róta and the youngest Norn, called Skuld, are Valkyries, who ride to choose who shall be slain and to govern the killings. With the other Fates, Skuld sits at the Urdawell spinning threads about the human's future. Skuld comes from the verb skulu, meaning "shall". In Old Norse this has connotations of duty and obligation, but in the most archaic levels when the term first arose, it merely indicated that which should come to pass, given past circumstances. The other Norns are Urdhr and Verdhandi. /Etins Tarot: Devil,Justice Galdr: naudhiz naudhiz naudhiz n n n n n n n n n nu na nu ne no nudh nadh hudh nedh niodh (nut nat nit net not) un an in en on n n n n n n n n n Stödhur (Positions): I. Stand erect, with your right arm raised to the side and your left arm slanting down to form a line with the right. II. a) Cross-stadha (stand erect with your arms sticking straight out to your sides to form a †). Say "æpandi nam." b) After speaking the formula, lower your hands to your hips. Need and want are not the same thing - this rune encourages us to remember that fact. Only when we are fighting for our very survival are we likely to understand the things we truly need. In the short term things are not favourable for romantic relationships. It could symbolize your need for a companion. Plus, in other interpretations of the rune, it can also mean comstraint, showing that you need to hold on to it once you've got it. To achieve long-term goals or help lost causes.
