In developed countries, counterfeiting is not a big issue and poor nations are left to combat this fraudulence alone with lack of resources and loose government regulations. Sometimes, these developing countries are even oblivious of the penetration of counterfeit medicines in their borders while developed countries were safe and assured of the quality of medicine they are getting. That was before drug scams eventually dominated online pharmacies and drug counterfeiting became a global issue.

It was also known that drug counterfeiting is led by illegal mafia who has criminal complaints filed against them. In the latter part of numerous operations against these groups, bribery and corruption within the government were found to be involved, adding to the challenge of taking this illegal practice down. However, it was eventually reported that substandard medicines, which are also deemed unfit and dangerous by the authorities are being manufactured by legitimate pharmaceutical companies themselves. More often, manufacturers save money by including little or no real medicine. With these reviews, the confidence built on the quality of healthcare stands on the test of trust.

To reassure the public of pure intentions and redeem their reputation, a number of pharmaceutical companies – most of them start-ups – poured a generous amount of money into their supply chains or the process of making, packaging and shipping of drugs to pharmacies around the world. Non-profit organizations also issued their assistance to ensure new trust.

Among the companies are the following:

mPedigree

With mPedigree, you can send a text to verify that your medicine is safe. Ghana entrepreneur Bright Simons developed a texting service that's helping countries with high counterfeit drug rates, like Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana. The company puts a 12-digit code on every box of medicines. The company also partners with Sanofi, Roche and AstraZenca.

The Peterson Group

Leading the Asia-Pacific region in a combat against counterfeiting, The Peterson Group has proven worthy of the increasing number of members, mostly concerned individuals, willing to fight with the same cause. TPG has been able to assist in numerous raids in Jakarta, Indonesia and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and has brought down at least $2 million worth of counterfeit drugs including fraud Viagra, Cialis and Tamiflu.

CertiRx Corp

CertiRx Corp. embeds trackers into the medicine itself. Using inactive ingredients, the company can place tags in both liquid and tablet medicine. The tags contain information about the medicine, including the batch it came from, MedCityNews reports.
