Parenting today isn't the same as just ten or fifteen years ago. As parents we want to be sure our children have a healthy and safe childhood, while still having the freedom to develop their own interest and personality. That means giving your children some space and not putting your nose into everything they do. On the other hand, as an adult it is your responsibility to keep your children safe from things that can traumatize and hurt your children. Internet pornography is such a thing.

First of all though, we should understand that not all children that are exposed to pornography will be damaged from it. Children are able to separate fantasy from reality and they are not necessarily going to be traumatized from a few exposures to nudity or erotic pictures. That is not to say, you shouldn't take actions. There are several reasons why. Studies have shown that repeated viewing of porn has many damaging effects on children. Children exposed to porn are more likely to act out sexually and get STD's and unwanted pregnancies. Even more disturbing is the fact that pornography can make children potential victims of sexual predators. The long term effects of exposure to porn in children are similar to those of an addict. It becomes increasingly difficult for the child and teen to distinguish fantasy from reality and that leads to the above mentioned risks.

Parental control on the internet can be done in several ways. Free parental control software will allow you to manually block websites. This is the least effective method as there are literally thousands of websites with pornographic content. You probably don't want to look trough the internet for porn sites either.

The best solution is to use one of the paid services that work from a huge database. These services use both employees and technology to find images, keywords and files with pornographic content. This means that all unwanted porn will be blocked even if it is sent in emails or trough instant messaging. You also get a wide range of other options, such as limiting the time your child can spend online or at what hours. All in all, this is the solution most parents should be looking for.

Find out how you can keep your children safe on the internet and learn all about how to stop addiction today.
