Stunt’s net worth also includes an impressive art collection. He is a keen collector of Old Master Paintings and of Modern Art, especially artists such as Sir Peter Lely, Sir Godfrey Kneller, Picasso and Degas, Monet, John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Titian, and Sir Thomas Lawrence. His collection of Sir Peter Lely paintings ranks among the most extensive, on par with the Royal Collection.
He made waves when he purchased the world’s most expensive Van Dyck painting for £12.5 Million in 2013. The National Portrait Gallery also made a bid for the painting but fell short. As a result, the English government placed a 3 month export ban on the Van Dyck with the intention to buy it back for the country. The news inspired a massive-scale art campaign which raised 10 million pounds. Upon seeing how important the painting was to his country, Stunt withdrew his bid. The painting remains in Britain today.
James Stunt has also moved into the contemporary art market with four Oscar Murillo pieces, and art by Lucian Smith, Michael Manning, and several other contemporary artists. He recently bought a Marc Quinn sculpture called ‘Self’, which is made from solid gold and cost $12.1 Million dollars.
