2:17 p.m.—GREEN FLAG: Jeff Gordon gets the Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 under way from Martinsville Speedway. Lap 1—Jeff Gordon grabs the inside line and leads the first lap. Lap 5—Matt Kenseth has struggled at the start and fallen back from 10th to 13th. Lap 10—Kasey Kahne has fallen from his sixth position all the way back to 19th. Lap 13—Tony Stewart is up to third position and has a fast car. Jimmie Johnson follows in fourth. Lap 17—Juan Montoya is solid in the early laps and moves around Carl Edwards to take ninth place. Lap 21—YELLOW FLAG NO. 1: Michael Waltrip spins and backs up to the top of the corner. He made slight contact with the wall. Lap 22—Several cars near the back (17 total) hit pit road. Cars cannot take fuel during this caution due to the competition caution scheduled for Lap 40. Takers include Greg Biffle, Joey Logano, Kasey Kahne and Aric Almirola, among others. Lap 27—GREEN FLAG: Jeff Gordon leads the field to green. 1. Jeff Gordon 2. Kurt Busch 3. Jimmie Johnson 4. Tony Stewart 5. Clint Bowyer Lap 41—YELLOW FLAG NO. 2: NASCAR is holding a competition caution due to no Saturday practice. Pit stops are optional. Lap 43—Leaders head down pit road: • Jimmie Johnson gets a chassis adjustment and is tight • Kyle Busch makes adjustments to the chassis, track bar and air pressure • Jeff Gordon is tight in the center and adjusts his air pressure • Mark Martin gains 20 positions and is out eighth with fuel only • Michael Waltrip gets the free pass Lap 48—GREEN FLAG: Scott Speeds leads the field to green as he and Robby Gordon do not pit. 1. Scott Speed 2. Robby Gordon 3. Jeff Gordon 4. Kurt Busch 5. Jimmie Johnson Lap 57—LEAD CHANGE: Jeff Gordon goes below Scott Speed to reclaim the lead. Lap 61—Dale Earnhardt Jr. is having transmission problems. His pit stop was long because of several changes made to the car, and a crewman helped install a bungee cord around the shifter so the car would remain in gear. Lap 66—Denny Hamlin is on the move, passing Jimmie Johnson to take third place. Lap 70—YELLOW FLAG NO. 3: Scott Speed and Kyle Busch spin. Busch went below Speed to pass, and Busch's car got loose and spun, collecting Speed. Speed has some damage. Lap 76—GREEN FLAG: Jeff Gordon gets the race back under way. 1. Jeff Gordon 2. Kurt Busch 3. Denny Hamlin 4. Clint Bowyer 5. Tony Stewart Lap 78—NASCAR is penalizing Matt Kenseth with a pass-through penalty because he did not comply with the previous penalty of restarting at the back of the pack. The team is disputing that the tire did not get out of their pit box. Lap 79—Matt Kenseth is being black-flagged and now heads to pit road. Lap 85—Matt Kenseth is now one lap down in 39th after his penalty. Lap 91—YELLOW FLAG NO. 4: Robby Gordon spins out with a flat tire. Lap 97—GREEN FLAG: Jeff Gordon leads the field to green. 1. Jeff Gordon 2. Kurt Busch 3. Denny Hamlin 4. Clint Bowyer 5. Tony Stewart Lap 104—Denny Hamlin dives below Kurt Busch to take second spot. Clint Bowyer tries to follow but can't. Lap 115—Dale Earnhardt Jr. has recovered from his early issues and now runs ninth, just ahead of Marcos Ambrose Lap 129—David Gilliland is up to the top of the track with a tire down. He dives to the bottom and to pit road. No caution. Lap 133—Kevin Harvick is having a quiet but solid day running in sixth. Lap 139—YELLOW FLAG NO. 5: David Ragan and Robby Gordon make contact. Gordon's tire went down, sending him up and into Ragan. Ragan has right-side damage. Lap 140—Leaders head down pit road: • Jeff Gordon gets a chassis adjustment and air-pressure change • Tony Stewart makes an air-pressure adjustment and wedge adjustment • Mark Martin gains five spots with a quick stop • Clint Bowyer's crew drops a lug nut, delaying the stop • Martin Truex Jr. is caught speeding and gets blocked in his stall • Kyle Busch is caught speeding on pit road • Scott Riggs gets the free pass Lap 144—GREEN FLAG: Jeff Gordon gets the race going again. 1. Jeff Gordon 2. Denny Hamlin 3. Kurt Busch 4. Tony Stewart 5. Carl Edwards Lap 150—Tony Stewart moves by Kurt Busch to take third place. Lap 156—LEAD CHANGE: Denny Hamlin fights below Jeff Gordon to lead the lap by a nose. Lap 160—Dale Earnhardt Jr. is up to sixth position after battling an ill-handling car earlier in the day. Lap 170—Tony Stewart moves by Jeff Gordon for second. Lap 205—Kyle Busch slides into the top of the corner with a flat right-front tire. No damage. He gets it turned and onto pit road. Lap 211—Dale Earnhardt Jr. has the fastest car on the track in sixth place, but the leaders are battling slower traffic Lap 220—Carl Edwards has the only Ford in the top 10 and is running fifth. Lap 241—Jimmie Johnson has cracked the top 10 and is now running 10th behind teammate Mark Martin. Lap 254—YELLOW FLAG NO. 6: Aric Almirola has his third flat tire of the day. Scott Speed also has a cut tire. Lap 256—Leaders head to pit road: • Jimmie Johnson gets four tires and changes in wedge • Dale Earnhardt Jr. is good and needs only four tires and fuel • Carl Edwards loses several spots with a dropped lug nut • Denny Hamlin gets changes and tires • Michael Waltrip gets the free pass Lap 265—GREEN FLAG: Denny Hamlin leads the field to green. 1. Jimmie Johnson Lap 275—All four Hendrick Motorsports cars are sixth or better: Jeff Gordon (second), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (third), Jimmie Johnson (fifth) and Mark Martin (sixth). Lap 280—Carl Edwards has a left-rear tire down after contact with David Reutimann. Edwards gets onto pit road safely. Lap 300—With 200 laps to go, Denny Hamlin continues to lead by 0.874 seconds ahead of Jeff Gordon. Lap 310—Tony Stewart has the fastest car on the track and is running in sixth Lap 320—Denny Hamlin's lead is 1.259 seconds on Jeff Gordon. Lap 345—Side-by-side are the leaders, with Denny Hamlin holding on. Lap 346—LEAD CHANGE: Jeff Gordon bumps Denny Hamlin aside and grabs the lead. Lap 347—LEAD CHANGE: Denny Hamlin claims the lead back from Jeff Gordon. Lap 352—YELLOW FLAG NO. 7: Debris is on the track. Lap 353—Leaders head down pit road: • Jimmie Johnson gets minor adjustments and tires • Clint Bowyer asks for no changes, just tires • Denny Hamlin gets a chassis adjustment Lap 359—GREEN FLAG: Denny Hamlin gets the race going again. 1. Lap 372—GREEN FLAG: Denny Hamlin gets the race going again. 1. Denny Hamlin 2. Jeff Gordon 3. Jimmie Johnson 4. Clint Bowyer 5. Tony Stewart Lap 390—Tony Stewart has the fastest car on the track and is running fifth. Lap 400—With 100 laps to go, Denny Hamlin continues to lead Jeff Gordon by a car-length. Lap 410—Dale Earnhardt Jr. has the fastest car on the track while running in sixth. Lap 420—Jimmie Johnson is on Jeff Gordon's bumper racing for second position. He dives below and takes the spot from Gordon. Lap 428—YELLOW FLAG NO. 9: Jeremy Mayfield cannot get onto pit road, forcing NASCAR to throw the caution. Lap 429—Leaders hit pit road: • Jimmie Johnson gets a chassis adjustment and tires and is out first • Clint Bowyer is free and gets changes and tires • Tony Stewart asks for slight changes to make his car tighter Lap 430—LEAD CHANGE: Jimmie Johnson is the new leader after winning the race off pit road. Clint Bowyer 5. Jeff Gordon Lap 457—LEAD CHANGE: Denny Hamlin dives to the inside at the green flag and makes the move stick to take the lead. Lap 460—Matt Kenseth gets shoved to the high side and loses several positions in the corner. He is in 25th, the last car one lap down. Lap 467—YELLOW FLAG NO. 11: David Reutimann spins coming out of Turn 4 after a cut tire following contact with David Stremme. Reutimann backs his car into the inside wall. Heavy damage to the rear bumper, but Reutimann drives away. Lap 472—GREEN FLAG: Denny Hamlin leads the field to green. 1. Denny Hamlin 2. Jimmie Johnson 3. Tony Stewart 4. Jeff Gordon 5. Clint Bowyer Lap 473—YELLOW FLAG NO. 12: Bobby Labonte spins out, and Martin Truex Jr. can't avoid running into him. Both drive away, but Truex has more damage to the nose and the rear. Clint Bowyer Lap 484—LEAD CHANGE: Jimmie Johnson nudges Denny Hamlin up the track, then drives below to take the lead. Lap 490—With 10 laps to go, Jimmie Johnson's lead is stable at 0.779 seconds. Lap 499—WHITE FLAG: Jimmie Johnson continues to cruise. Lap 500—CHECKERED FLAG: Jimmie Johnson wins the Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway.
